About Villa Walauwa

About Villa Walauwa

Walauwa, is the Sri Lankan term of a stately home, and Villa Walauwa definitely meets the criteria of a Walauwa. This two bedroom colonial style Villa decorated with local antiques creates a stately and luxurious ambiance.

Living area

The colourfully decorated Villa Walauwa has both indoor and outdoor living areas with a living room equipped with a large comfortable sofa in front a wide screen LED TV, ideal for just lying back and relaxing in front of a good movie. For both who would rather look at the lush tropical garden around Villa Walauwa and try some bird watching, there is a big veranda in front of the Villa with a eight seater table which is perfect for a large family meal.

Outdoor & pool area

While the veranda in front of Villa Walauwa is perfect for enjoying the garden, as well as views of the Indian Ocean. Guests who prefer to get into the ocean just have a walk a few steps down to the beach.

The bedrooms

The two bedrooms with traditional four poster beds and antique furniture, decorated with all sorts of hand-picked pieces of Asian art, it might be difficult to drag yourself away.

Service & Staff & Amenities

Villa Walauwa is equipped with a fully functioning kitchen, but if you want to be pampered, then that’s not a problem because as a part of the Earaliya Villas and Gardens, you will find that luxury is not something that is done imperfectly. Comfort is the key word for the staff at Villa Walauwa and they will do provide you with all the requisite services and amenities to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Around Villa Walauwa

Villa Walauwa is located in Weligama a small fishing village in the south coast of Sri Lanka, famous for its surfing friendly waves. Being only about 45 minutes of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle and the national wildlife park of Yala, there are plenty of things to do and see around the area.

The resort is beautiful - a wonderful spot overlooking the sea (close to the stilt fishermen) with a small but lovely pool. There aren't many other kids as it seems to be more a couples resort but that wasn't a problem. The kids enjoyed walking on the beach but in August with high tide that was a bit limited. Each room/villa has a butler, but other than bringing breakfast which we had on our porch (gorgeous setting) I'm not sure what their role was. There is also a spa on site - you get a very brief introductory foot massage but I did feel that the spa lady was on the prowl round the grounds, frequently asking if we wanted to book any treatments.

We stayed here for 4 nights in the 2 bedroom Wallauwa villa (2 adults and two kids aged 11 and 13). The setting itself is beautiful, perched above the beach looking out to the sea with nothing at all on the horizon. The hotel grounds are very nice, the pool is great, enough places to sit on chairs and beanbags in the gardens. The villa itself is very good and generally clean. Two bedrooms, both with kingsize beds and two bathrooms, both with showers. A bit dim, even with all the lights on but that's a small point. Also has a large living area and kitchen (with random bits of crockery and equipment, but you're unlikely to be cooking), large outside table where breakfast is brought to you each morning. And large outdoor sitting area too. What lets the place down is the food side of things. Breakfast is OK but not exceptional. You have to preorder the night before and tell them what time you want it. Then, in the morning, they bring most of what you asked for at a time of their choosing. If you asked for something at a specific time and told them you were heading out, then they brought it earlier than you wanted it (better than late though). If you gave them a time range, then they would normally bring it sometime after that window. Not a big thing but a bit annoying. Similarly, they don't always bring exactly what you wanted e.g. You want cornflakes and get muesli, you ask for egg hoppers and get nothing being told that the person who knows how to make egg hoppers is off that day! Lunch was OK although nothing stellar and we didn't stay in for dinner. Tuktuk into Weligama was about LKR200 and approx LKR500 to Mirissa. As for service, again, it was ok but with a little extra effort the hotel could really be great. E.g. Down by the pool, sometimes you got towels without asking and sometimes you had to really hunt around for someone to get you a mattress and/or towel. Again, not a big thing, just a bit annoying. And what is it with Sri Lanka and sweeping leaves up the whole time, especially at 7am outside your guests' bedroom window? Please don't do it! Overall though a lovely place and I would stay there again.

We spent four days in July at Eraeliya in The Wallauwa villa as a family of four with 2 teenaged daughters. The house is beautifully decorated and very well maintained. Beds: one should like hard matresses... Eraeliya is a very laid back and relaxed/relaxing place with good food and unobtrusive service. We enjoyed especially all the wild life coming by - 4:30pm sharp the Langure-monkeys hopp into the tree next to the villa to have a snack of foliage. The ocean-front location is unbeatable and simply stunning. The direct access to an almost private beach is great although in July currents and high waves can be dangerous. We would recommend Eraeliya villas to people who do not expect 5 star-accommodation, stiff and polished service and glitzy ammenities but appreciate natural friendliness of staff and enjoy a small and close- to- nature location.
